Diagnosing and Fixing Your Tractor Problems

Feb. 19 2020 Miscellaneous By ___

Tractors are an integral part of any farming or agricultural operation, and it’s important that they always remain at the ready and in good working order. However, even the best tractors can malfunction, sometimes in confusing ways. If you’re not well-versed in heavy machinery, you may not be aware of the types of problems that your tractor can have, how to diagnose these problems and how to fix them.

Four Brothers Outdoor Power, with locations in Royse City and Terrell, Texas, is your Lone Star State agriculture, outdoor, and power equipment dealer. We’ve provided the following guide to help you with diagnosing and fixing all of your tractor problems.

Dull Blades

One commonplace issue with tractor implements is that the blades don’t cut as cleanly or efficiently as they used to. This is because the blades will dull with regular use and need to be sharpened in order to perform well. If you use your tractor to mow, then you’ll want to sharpen the blades at least twice per year.

Small blades can be removed and filed by hand, but larger equipment may require some professional assistance, which you’ll find here at Four Brothers Outdoor Power. The blades do not need to be razor-sharp; much of their cutting power comes from their speed, so just smooth them out to make them more efficient.

Fuel Efficiency

If you notice that you’re filling up your fuel tank more often than you’re accustomed to, or that your tractor seems sluggish, you may have a fuel system issue. Low fuel pressure will lead to a loss of power, which means your tractor may even cease to be able to make use of implements.

The fuel control level on the engine can also become jammed up, which prevents fuel from getting to the engine. You can spray this part with some lubricant. If you find more serious issues, you’ll probably want to contact the pros at our dealership’s service department.

Electrical Problems

Another source of performance issues may be the battery on your tractor. If you’ve left your tractor sitting without use for a few weeks, the battery may have drained. You’ll also want to check the posts and cables for deposits of crusty white material or loose connections. The posts need to be cleaned, although very crusty batteries that can’t hold much charge obviously need replacement.

General Engine Trouble

The biggest threat to any engine is overheating, which can result if the coolant levels are allowed to sink too low. Always check your coolant on a cool engine so that you don’t burn yourself with hot liquid. Make sure that your engine is clean and free of grime, clean out the carburetor if it’s clogged and examine spark plugs to make sure that their casings are still whole.
